First Australian BETA users

The National Bank of Australia (NAB) has become the first Australian beta customer to implement a role-playing game (RPG) for its staff to learn about cloud technology in a fun and interactive way. The RPG, created by Amazon Web Services, is designed to help financial services staff excel in cloud computing.

How does an RPG work ?

The RPG uses gaming elements, such as quests, rewards, and challenges, to educate staff about cloud computing and its benefits for the financial industry. This approach to training helps employees learn in a more engaging and memorable way, and increases their motivation to adopt new technology in their daily work. The RPG also provides domain-specific solutions for common financial industry use cases, including fraud prevention.

The importance of training the bank’s technology talent

NAB’s Chief Technology Officer, Steve Day, emphasized the importance of training the bank’s technology talent. Steve said that NAB must ensure its employees are skilled in this area to ensure the success of both the employees and the bank. He said, “We are committed to fostering learning, development and growth in ways that encourage flexibility and human connection.”

Steve further added, “We are excited to offer AWS Industry Quest: Financial Services to our people which offers an innovative and humanistic way of learning and strengthening their cloud skills.”

Senior Analyst Engineer Daniel Drentin, who leads NAB’s use of the service, praised the step-by-step approach to learning through the RPG. He said it was helpful in correcting errors and identifying solutions. He wrote, “I wasn’t too sure what I was getting us into initially, however as an interactive learning experience, initially emphasizing financial services, NAB staff seemed well aligned to give it a try.”

“As one of the biggest employers of technology talent in the Southern Hemisphere. We need to ensure our people are trained incredibly well in this area so they and NAB can thrive,” NAB chief technology officer Steve Day
