Expanding Qld government smart ticketing programme

Cleveland in the southeast has been added to the Queensland government’s public transportation ticketing rollout, and commuters will have access to it as of the end of November.

The state government’s $371 million initiative, managed in collaboration with Cubic Transportation Systems, will launch the new service on Wednesday of this week for commuters travelling between Central station and Cleveland station.

In December 2020, the state government launched the smart ticketing system on the Gold Coast light rail network, enabling customers to pay with credit or debit cards as well as mobile devices.

Joan Pease, a member for Lytton, stated that she is “looking forward to seeing the rollout spread onto our local buses,” which is scheduled to happen in the coming months.

It will take a lot of work to replace 13,000 fixed devices and 12,000 onboard readers in order to unify 18 various payment methods used throughout the regional bus network under a single smart ticketing system, according to Pease.

The government is striving to make the system accommodate concession card holders.

Along the Ferny Grove, Ipswich/Rosewood, Springfield Central, Sunshine Coast/Caboolture, Redcliffe Peninsula, Doomben, and Shorncliffe train lines, the service is in operation.

The expansion of the Airport, Beenleigh, and Gold Coast train lines will be the next phase, linking passengers to the Gold Coast light rail all the way to Brisbane’s central business district.

All 18 Queensland Rail gated stations in South East Queensland have 180 smart ticketing gates already in place.
