Here we sit down with Anthony to learn more about his journey as an entrepreneur.
Q. Tell us a little more about your journey as an entrepreneur – how did you get started? What inspired you?
Anthony: My business journey started in my early childhood when my father would take me to visit his workplace, a food manufacturing facility, on the weekends. I was always fascinated that my father and my uncle ran this business and other people came here each day to work for them. In my later teenage years, I started part-time work there myself, which then transitioned to full-time.
Over the next 10 years, I took on different management roles in the company and this built my knowledge in the day-to-day operations of a business, with a great love of marketing developing. The catalyst for starting my own business was my podcast which I started in 2015. Listeners started reaching out, asking for help with their social media marketing. This turned into an ever-growing side hustle which built to the point where I left the family business and went full time in what is now AttentionMedia in 2019.
Q. What are your long-term goals in business? Paint a vision for the future
Anthony: Our vision is to become the #1 location-agnostic digital growth agency in Australia. My long-term goal is to build a thriving company that does not depend on me day to day to operate.
The people that work for the business are the most important aspect and building a world-class working environment that is flexible and provides a platform for people to do what they love is key.
Q. What motivates you?
Anthony: There are two key things that motivate me. First is my young family and not only helping to provide the best possible life for them as they grow up but also an abundant future.
Secondly, my love of business with the daily challenges, the highs and lows, the wins and the losses, drives me to build something of great value to support all those connected to it. Our team, our clients, our suppliers and the greater community.
Q. What is the most memorable thing you’ve done since you started your business?
Anthony: Q. What strategies do you use to optimize your performance or mindset?
Anthony: Human performance is an area that I have developed a keen obsession with over recent years. This comes from an understanding that if you want to get the most out of each day, it starts with you.
I am conscious of the quality of my sleep, I love the challenge and benefits of cold water therapy and the importance of practising mindfulness and meditation. As the old saying goes, “you only get out what you put in”.
Q. If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it?
Anthony: The Knowledge Gap.
The older I get, the more I realise just how little I know about everything. Whether we are talking about the human body, history, finances, technology, the environment or anything in between, most of us understand things at a surface level. I have learnt that in order to move forward in life, knowledge is key. If there is something you want to achieve, you can do it, but you will most likely need to learn how. This is what is known as the knowledge gap. The key to getting from point A to B in life is to learn in the way that suits you best to give you the knowledge to take action.
Q. Where do you see the future in your niche/industry 3-5 years from now?
Anthony: In 3-5 years, I see the digital marketing industry continuing to be a critical part of business operations with an exciting and diverse range of evolving opportunities.
The internet is transitioning towards virtual reality and the “metaverse” which will become more mainstream in both daily life and business.
Digital marketing is also becoming a specialist industry, where you seek out expert help to take full advantage of the ever-changing platforms. There are too many platforms, updates and options for business owners to run their digital marketing effectively while also running a business. You need people either internally or externally who are experts in digital marketing platforms to maximise results and returns.
Q. What is your ‘one-sentence’ piece of advice you’d like to give to someone who wants to become an entrepreneur, coach, or business owner?
Anthony: Just do it! Give it a go. Life is too short and you don’t want to have regrets. Being an entrepreneur, coach or business owner is not for everyone, but if it is something that interests you, you should chase that opportunity and experience it.
