Lufthansa has revealed a bizarre rule about the use of Airtags on board flights.
The German airline says that Airtags must be turned off during takeoff and landing, and must not be used in the aircraft cabin at any time.
This is because the Airtags emit a radio signal that could interfere with the aircraft’s navigation systems.
As per the local publication WirtschaftsWoche, the German airline has told passengers to remove batteries from trackers like Apple AirTags before flying.
Lufthansa says that the Airtags can be used in the aircraft’s cargo hold, but they must be turned off while the aircraft is in the air.
The Airtags can be turned back on once the aircraft has landed and is taxiing to the terminal.
The airline also confirmed via Twitter that AirTags must be deactivated if stored in checked luggage.
“Lufthansa is banning activated AirTags from luggage as they are classified as dangerous. AirTags need to be turned off,” the company tweeted.
The Airtag is a small, battery-powered device that can be attached to any object, such as a keychain or a bag. It uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with nearby iPhones, and can be used to track the location of the object it is attached to.
Lufthansa says that it is concerned that Airtag could be used to track the location of its aircraft, and has therefore banned the use of the devices on board its flights.
