Due to a cyber security problem, Medibank has shut down two customer-facing services “to limit the potential of harm to systems or data loss.”
According to the insurer, insurance management systems for both its ahm brand and foreign students are currently unavailable and will be for “the majority of the day.”
Aside from the discovery of “strange behaviour on its network,” it did not go into specifics about what had happened.
According to Medibank CEO David Koczkar, “We are working around the clock to uncover the exact scope of the issue and any additional impact this incident may have on our customers, our personnel, and our broader ecosystem.”
In his apology for the incident, Koczkar said that he understood “that in the current context this news may raise concerns among individuals.”
We understand that we have a big responsibility to the individuals whose health and wellbeing depend on us, and whose data we possess, he said.
Resolving this issue as clearly and promptly as we can is our top priority.
According to Medibank, “specialised cyber security firms” were brought in to help with the incident response.
It said there was “no evidence that any sensitive data, including customer data, has been accessed… at this stage.”
