Gaming time has no impact on well-being, study finds

A study conducted to find the link between gaming time and well-being suggests ‘’ little to no evidence’’ time spent playing games affects well-being. The study collected data from 39,000 video gamers. Who had to play for 10 hours or more than usual per day to check the difference. It recommends the reason for playing games was far more likely to have an impact.

The study contradicts the previous study conducted in 2020 by the same department at the Oxford Internet Institute. However, the 2020 study includes a smaller group of players and suggests that those who played games for longer were happier.

With more free time to play video games, you’re probably a happier person

Prof Andrew Przybylski, who worked on both studies said, “Common sense says if you have more free time to play video games, you’re probably a happier person,”

“But contrary to what we might think about games being good or bad for us, we found [in this latest study] pretty conclusive evidence that how much you play doesn’t have any bearing whatsoever on changes in well-being.

“If players were playing because they wanted to, rather than because they felt compelled to, they had to, they tended to feel better.”

The study was published in the Royal Society Open science journal. Meanwhile, the data is collection from tech companies after getting players’ consent. The data is from games including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Apex Legends, Forza Horizon 4, The Crew 2, Gran Turismo Sport, and Eve Online.

Playing helps mental health

Mike Dailly, who created Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto, said the benefits were varied. Also, many gamers around the world say playing games helps their mental health.

Mike says, “I’m not sure it’s something that’s measurable with a single ‘well-being’ state,” he added, “As is everything in life, it’s a balance. Spending 24 hours a day playing, that’s not good – but spending 24 hours a day eating or working out, that is also not good.”
