After nearly 27 years, Microsoft retires Internet Explorer on Wednesday. The iconic Microsoft product retires in favor of Microsoft Edge. Now the users will be redirected to Microsoft Edge which is a newer answer to the company’s web browsing in ‘’IE mode.’’
IE mood allows users to access previous Internet Explorer-based websites, and applications. Meanwhile, Microsoft is planning on a window update that will remove all IE icons from devices.
Sean Lyndersay, General Manager of Microsoft Edge Enterprise, said in the blog post-Wednesday. “The web has evolved and so have browsers. Incremental improvements to Internet Explorer couldn’t match the general improvements to the web at large, so we started fresh.”
Google Chrome, Apple’s Safari and Mozilla Firefox dominancy
Internet Explorer’s popularity diminishes with the launch of faster browsers. Such as Chrome, Apple’s Safari and Mozilla Firefox. Google Chrome is leading the market with 73% shares. Meanwhile, smartphone pre-installed browsers have changed the scenario. Apple’s pre-installed Safari browser and Google Chrome on Android phones help to shift access to the internet.
In comparison, Microsoft Explorer is slow, and not practically compatible with modern web browsers. It is also less secure than modern browsers. It’s been in steady decline for nearly two decades. Which previously enjoyed almost 95% of the market in 2002.
Farewell to Microsoft Explorer
If you are a consumer of Microsoft Explorer, you will transition to Microsoft Edge. Now you will enjoy a faster, more secure and modern browser. However, once a widely used browser Microsoft Explorer’s legacy will remain. Since it’s been incredibly difficult for Microsoft to support Explorer side by side with modern browsers.
Sean Lyndersay, General Manager, Microsoft Edge Enterprises wrote in a blog post, ‘’We can’t thank everyone enough for supporting Internet Explorer over the years. Many people and organizations around the world have depended on IE to support them as they’ve learned, grown and conducted business online. Microsoft Edge with Internet Explorer mode inherits this important responsibility, and we look forward to supporting you online with Microsoft Edge.’’
