A diversified suite of secret cloud services

The department of Defence reveals plans for a secret cloud environment. They want to improve and transform the IT environment and information sharing with other agencies.

Besides escalating national’s security risk, the department revealed its plan for multi-vendor cloud service. Including IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS cloud services at the secret level. According to notice to industry, the department approach the market in June. Also, the department will identify potential industry partners to provide secret cloud services.

Collaborate effectively and efficiently at the secret security classification

Department of foreign affairs, the department of home affairs and trade have shown interest in using the environment in near future. Also, documents show a need for security, police and intelligence agencies to ‘’ collaborate effectively and efficiently at the secret security classification”.

The defence said, ‘’ this is hamper by siloed information systems and the use of disparate networks.’’ The department is also willing to use the cloud service to ‘’ rapidly adopt modern technology suites, deploy new capabilities… faster and leverage the scale and pace of change available.’’

It added, ‘’ availability of public cloud service at official and protected security classifications have enabled capabilities that go part way to addressing these needs.’’ Meanwhile, the full realisation of the service only occurs being realise at a higher security agency. 

Rapidly establish a foundational secret IaaS cloud service

Furthermore, the diverse multi-vendor secret cloud will host in Australia. They will use several distinct tranches. The document states, ‘’ Each Tranche of the program will be aim at procuring specific cloud services. That aligned to business or capabilities priorities.’’

Moreover, the defence said that the initial request for expressions of interest will be in June. It will help to rapidly establish a foundational secret IaaS cloud service. The defence said, ‘’ for the first tranche, it intends to seek to partner with one or more cloud service providers.  Meanwhile, the infrastructure would need to be ‘’ ready for accreditation at the secret level for the defence environment within six months of contract signing.’’

Moreover, these will help secure information sharing, edge computing, rapid prototyping and development introducing new applications and faster services.
