Australia’s ID verification systems ‘deficient ‘ independent review

According to an independent review, identity verification in Australia needs an overview to make better use of its biometrics. The secret review also suggests the government make its facial verification system available to the private sector as well. 

The review send to the government back in 2019, However, it was never release. Former Attorney-General’s Department secretary Roger Wilkins and IDCARE managing director David Lacey led the review in 2018. 

The system of identity has a large number of weaknesses

According to the review, Australia’s system of identity has a large number of deficiencies. The reason is due to its “ad hoc” origins. Moreover, it is not fit for future transactions. 

According to the KPMG modelling commission by home affairs as part of the review, in comparison to other countries, the ID system is more costly. Furthermore, it is inconvenient and less secure. 

An appendix to the review reads, ” the model indicates that the current Australian system has a lower level of integrity, and utility, and a higher level of friction than most other countries such as Israel and New Zealand”.

In Australia, there is limit use of the biometric system for verification. KPGM further added, ” the lower utility and higher friction levels reflect a large number of credentials in Australia used for identity purposes, and the widespread acceptance of the 100- point check which requires individuals to produce multiple credentials to provide identity. 

More use face verification

Meanwhile, the report suggests that the Australian system considers the “skinny” concept of identity often. However, core identity such as name and date of birth contribute to a small number. 

The review’s author said, ” All other attributes or information,” should be treated as additional information about a person” 69 maximize “privacy, interoperability and portability.”
