Startup’s Claim of Bringing Back Dire Wolves Raises Eyebrows

An American biotech company says it’s done something straight out of science fiction — bringing dire wolves back from extinction. But not everyone’s convinced.

The startup, Colossal Biosciences, made headlines this week with a bold claim. It says it has achieved “functional de-extinction” by creating pups that resemble the long-extinct predators.

The story exploded — appearing in magazines, trending on social media, and popping up on big-name podcasts. It’s a PR win. But some scientists are raising their eyebrows.

Are They Actually Dire Wolves?

Let’s clear one thing up: dire wolves went extinct around 13,000 years ago. They weren’t just oversized dogs. They were a distinct species that diverged from modern grey wolves nearly six million years ago. Since then, a lot has changed — genetically, physically, and behaviorally.

So, what exactly did Colossal do?

The company compared DNA from dire wolf fossils with grey wolf DNA. Then, they edited about 20 genes in grey wolf embryos. The changes gave the pups some traits resembling dire wolves — like lighter coats.

Three pups were born: two males and one female. According to the company, they’re “thriving” at a secretive wildlife preserve in the U.S.

A Little Showbiz With the Science

To add more flair, the pups were named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi — yes, like the Game of Thrones characters. That’s no coincidence. Author George R.R. Martin is an investor and advisor at Colossal.

The company’s press release was packed with pop culture references. Think Twilight, Metallica, Bon Iver — and even a celebrity baby name list featuring “Wolf.”

It’s a marketing dream. But scientists are treating it with caution.

What Scientists Are Saying

Experts in evolutionary genetics were quick to draw a line. A grey wolf with tweaked genes isn’t the same as a dire wolf. One scientist compared it to painting a car red and calling it a Ferrari — it may look similar, but it’s not the same under the hood.

Real dire wolves had complex traits we still don’t fully understand. That includes their skeletons, behavior, and internal biology. And cloning extinct animals isn’t possible — ancient DNA degrades over time. So, we’re not truly bringing anything “back.”

The term “functional de-extinction” is doing a lot of work here. It refers to mimicking an extinct species, not reviving the original.

What’s Next?

Colossal says it plans to publish a scientific paper to support its claims. So far, though, all the information has come from press releases and interviews. Peer-reviewed data is still pending.

The three pups are reportedly living on an 8-square-kilometre reserve under the care of a dedicated team. The company says they’ll be cared for throughout their lives.

Dire Wolves: Back From the Dead?

Not exactly. Colossal may have created a clever imitation — one with some familiar traits and behaviors. But the real dire wolf is still a creature of the past.
