Powerlink Queensland is advancing its SAP system by migrating it from its own Azure infrastructure to SAP’s managed cloud. This move, which is part of Powerlink’s ongoing upgrades to its enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, is already 50 percent complete, with its research and development environments transitioned successfully. Because of their numerous digital initiatives connected to SAP, the development environment continues to be one of Powerlink’s most active sectors, according to Mark Pozdena, General Manager of Business IT.
Joule, SAP’s AI copilot, which enables natural language interactions with SAP systems, is now available to Powerlink thanks to the switch to SAP’s “RISE” platform. This transition aligns with Powerlink’s positive experience using Microsoft 365 Copilot and builds on its goal to incorporate similar AI-driven features within the SAP ecosystem. Pozdena described how this AI integration, especially Joule’s ability to interact with financial data, could significantly enhance productivity by bridging other tools like Microsoft Copilot and Snowflake AI.
Powerlink’s journey to this SAP upgrade stems from a digital vision aimed at providing stakeholders with seamless access to critical resources. To achieve this vision, Powerlink has implemented a series of strategies covering data, ERP investment, application lifecycle, and security, which Pozdena identified as essential for any digital transformation in today’s environment.

Initially, Powerlink started with SAP Business Suite running on Oracle database infrastructure in its own data center. The ERP upgrade began with a migration of the database to SAP HANA on Azure, followed by an upgrade from ECC to S/4HANA. Over the last 18 months, Powerlink has added features like transmission billing, a Sustainability Control Tower for climate reporting, and, most recently, the SAP S/4 2023 version.
The decision to adopt SAP RISE earlier than scheduled was driven by several factors, including recent infrastructure upgrades and the alignment of Powerlink’s cloud infrastructure goals. Pozdena pointed out that executive sponsorship, clear project segmentation, and a phased approach were key to Powerlink’s success. By dividing projects between technical and business areas and delivering in smaller phases, Powerlink minimized the risks associated with large-scale ERP transformations. This approach has enabled Powerlink to proceed smoothly with SAP enhancements, paving the way for a robust digital future.
