Australia to Import LNG to Address Future Gas Shortage

Australia is preparing to import gas to address a future gas shortage. Despite being the world’s largest gas exporter, the country is taking an unexpected step. The issue has raised concerns among consumers.

According to sources, a $1 billion import terminal is under construction at Port Kembla in New South Wales. Rob Wheals, Chief Executive of Mr. Forrest’s Squadron Energy, says the east coast is about to run short of gas. Speaking to ABC, he stated that the outlook is dire, adding, ‘We are facing a critical, structural shortfall by 2028.’

Meanwhile, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has predicted a shortage within a few years. This forecast could also impact gas bills in the coming years. If there is another cold winter, households will need more heating, leading to higher prices.

Energy analysts believe there is no gas shortage

Tom Quinn, an energy analyst, described the terminal as “madness.” He stated that it highlights the government’s failure to enforce companies to reserve enough gas to keep heaters running in the winter. He added, “We’ve seen an absolute explosion in LNG exports, largely unrestrained.”

According to Quinn, companies are sending most of the gas offshore, putting domestic manufacturers at risk. Meanwhile, Australia Institute research director Rod Campbell pointed out that over the past 10-15 years, the country’s gas production has tripled.

However, gas production in Victoria and South Australia is declining, posing a major threat to the market during extreme weather events and leading to unplanned outages.

Australia Institute research director Rod Campbell argued that Australia urgently needs to electrify in order to protect consumers from gas companies, which have always intended to use LNG exports as a way to increase domestic gas prices and profits.

He suggested that if the country were facing a water shortage, the government would immediately advise people to use less. According to Campbell, the lack of similar action regarding gas is because the country is not truly running out of gas, but rather the situation is being driven by efforts to sell as much as possible.
