Microsoft will host a cybersecurity summit in September to address improving cybersecurity systems after a recent global IT outage caused by a faulty CrowdStrike update. This outage, which occurred on July 19, disrupted nearly 8.5 million Windows devices. The event impacted industries including airlines, banks, and healthcare.
The summit is scheduled for September 10 at Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft plans to invite government representatives to discuss the lessons learned from the outage and how to strengthen the overall cybersecurity ecosystem.
The event highlights the need for better contingency planning in case of IT system failures. The recent outage has revealed significant risks associated with relying on single-vendor security solutions.
CrowdStrike, which has faced a $9 billion market value loss since the outage, is now facing legal action from shareholders who claim the company concealed software testing inadequacies that led to the disruption. Additionally, Delta Air Lines has announced legal claims against both CrowdStrike and Microsoft, citing the outage’s impact, which resulted in mass flight cancellations and at least $500 million in losses.
CrowdStrike will report its second-quarter financial results on August 28.
