Nvidia and AMD gaming laptops can use Microsoft’s Copilot Plus AI feature

NVIDIA and AMD are gearing up to release gaming laptops that will get the new AI CoPilot Plus features that Microsoft announced for Qualcomm laptops. At a recent tech event, Nvidia hinted that Asus and MSI will soon offer an “RTX AI PC” laptop with these features.

Nvidia shared in a blog post that these new laptops will have GPUs running GeForce RTX 4070 and high-performance systems-on-a-chip, supporting Windows 11 AI capabilities. They also confirmed to The Verge that the laptops will include AMD’s latest Strix CPUs.

AMD has yet to provide specifications for its Strix laptop CPU, though an announcement is expected soon. Nvidia has also suggested that the first AMD laptops with CoPilot Plus won’t get all the new AI features right away. It will  possibly be having an initial exclusive period starting June 18 for Qualcomm-devices

Nvidia’s AI-focused laptop is expected soon, promising a free update adding Copilot Plus features when available. This could indicate that Microsoft is not yet prepared to release all AI functions for AMD CPUs at once.

By mandating its GPUs for AI tasks in laptops, NVIDIA hopes to maintain its relevance in the field of artificial intelligence. They stress that compared to other processors, the “RTX AI Laptop” can handle challenging AI tasks better. Nvidia will also release the RTX AI Toolkit in June to help developers optimize AI models for better performance with less memory usage.

Nvidia and Microsoft are collaborating on the AI model of Windows 11. The partnership will help developers quickly deploy Nvidia’s powerful GPUs for Artificial intelligence projects, which are expected to appear in Developer Preview later this year.

Overall, while NPUs work well for smaller AI models in laptops, Nvidia GPUs are better for larger models and higher performance, especially in desktops. This ongoing competition in AI capabilities for PCs, especially with Microsoft’s involvement, will be interesting to follow.
