Santander customers’ private data put up for sale by hackers

As reported by multiple news agencies, Santander staff and millions of customers’ accounts are hacked. The hackers are trying to sell the confidential private data of the customers. According to the Guardian, it is the same group who hacked the data of Ticketmaster. ShinyHunters advertised a hacker forum, asking price of $2m (£1.6m).

The hackers went on to say Santander is also welcome to buy this data, offering the bank to buy back the confidential data. Meanwhile, the bank apologized for the act, as its customers and staff are directly affected.

On 14th May, the bank issued a statement saying unauthorized access to the database was hosted by a third-party provider. The bank also mentioned that  the customers of Santander Chile, Spain and Uruguay, as well as all current and some former Santander employees of the group had been accessed.

However, the bank ensured that no transactional data was included in the stolen database which allows any kind of transaction. This does  affect the bank operations, and their customers can continue to do transactions.

The bank also issued a few advice to its customers saying that the bank will never ask for codes, OTPs or passwords. Report any kind of suspicious sms, and also contact through bank official channels for information.
