Google will soon start testing search and shopping ads in its AI-powered answers in the US, following the recent announcement of its AI design feature at the annual I/O conference.
These ads will be displayed in the ‘Sponsored’ section of AI Overview, based on the question and importance of the information, as announced by the company in a blog post. The move marks Google’s efforts to expand its dominance from traditional search advertising to the increasingly enabling AI technology.
By integrating AI into its search engine, Google aims to increase its ad sales, an important revenue stream for the tech giant. In the first quarter ended March 31, Google reported a 13 per cent increase in ad sales, to $61.7 billion (AU$92.6 billion).
The company said it will continue to test new ad formats and gather feedback from advertisers. At today’s I/O conference, Google parent company Alphabet unveiled its advancements in AI across business areas, including an enhanced Gemini chatbot and improvements to its flagship search engine
