Premier Steven Miles and Treasurer Cameron Dick announced an energy bill rebate of $1000 for the residents of Queensland. This $2.5 billion initiative, revealed on Thursday, will provide direct financial relief to households. The rebate is set to take effect from July 1. Premier Miles emphasized that this initiative will effectively eliminate electricity costs for households during the first three months of the upcoming financial year.
The rebate represents an expansion of the previous $550 energy bill rebate introduced for the 2023-24 period. Small businesses will also benefit from a rebate of $325 on their power bills.
Eligibility for the rebate is broad, including every household in the state without the need for individual applications. To qualify, residential customers must have an electricity account with their provider as of July 1, 2024. Moreover, be separately metered and charged for their electricity consumption. Additionally, eligible seniors, pensioners, and concession card holders will receive a higher rebate of $1372.
The rebate will be automatically applied to electricity bills, effectively reducing the amount owed. Given that the average quarterly electricity bill in Queensland is around $315, according to Canstar, the $1000 rebate is expected to cover multiple billing cycles. It will potentially eliminate out-of-pocket expenses for households until 2025.
Treasurer Dick highlighted the magnitude of this rebate. He states that it is the largest ever offered by any government in Australia’s history and is projected to save Queenslanders over $2.5 billion collectively.
