Xaira:A Billion-Dollar Leap into AI Drug Discovery

A new startup called Xaira has just launched with a whopping $1 billion in funding. The company is all set to dive into drug development using AI technology. This breakthrough comes as the tech world is buzzing about the potential of AI to revolutionize various industries, including biotech.

According to TechCrunch reports, Xaira Therapeutics, incubated by ARCH Venture Partners and Foresite Labs, has been quietly working behind the scenes for about six months. They’ve attracted investment from big names like F-Prime, NEA, Sequoia Capital, and more.

Marc Tessier-Lavigne, Xaira’s CEO, who previously held positions at Stanford and Genentech, is enthusiastic about the potential of AI to enable the creation of drugs that were once thought impossible. He believes recent advancements in AI technology have opened up new possibilities for drug discovery.

The core of Xaira’s AI technology comes from the University of Washington’s Institute of Protein Design, led by co-founder David Baker. These AI models, similar to those behind image generators like DALL-E, are designed to create molecular structures for real-world applications.

While Xaira’s investors are optimistic about the company’s potential, they acknowledge that AI applications in biology are still in their early stages. Unlike in tech, where data for training AI models is abundant, generating data for biology and medicine is a challenge.

Other companies, like Recursion and Genesis Therapeutics, are also exploring AI-driven drug discovery. However, Xaira has yet to announce when they expect to conduct human trials for their first drug.

Despite concerns raised about Tessier-Lavigne’s past controversies, investors remain confident in his leadership. They believe his integrity and scientific expertise make him the right person to lead Xaira’s AI drug discovery efforts.
