Residents of Southeast Queensland and parts of New South Wales are being urged to stay alert as potentially severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the region on Christmas Eve. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued warnings for multiple areas, including Brisbane, Toowoomba, Sydney, and Newcastle.
The main threats from these storms are heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding, damaging winds, and large hail. The BOM warns that some storms could become “very dangerous” with intense rain. Specifically, near the Samford and D’Aguilar Ranges, potentially impacting Strathpine, Redcliffe, and Caboolture. Residents in these areas are advised to stay indoors and avoid driving until the storm passes.
Storm Movement and Updates
The thunderstorms are currently moving northeastward and are expected to affect various locations throughout the afternoon. The BOM is closely monitoring the situation and providing regular updates through their website and social media channels.
Melbourne’s iconic Carols by Candlelight event faces a potential washout with a high chance of showers. Meanwhile, a possible thunderstorm forecast for the late afternoon and evening. Despite the weather concerns, organizers are determined to proceed with the event. The Carols by Candlelight will be held at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
The low-pressure system causing the storms in Queensland is expected to move south across New South Wales and Victoria, bringing widespread wet weather. While showers are likely, there is still a chance that the carols in Melbourne will go on as planned.

Meanwhile, multiple severe heatwave warnings remain in place for Western Australia, with temperatures expected to reach up to 45°C in the Pilbara, Gascoyne, North Interior, and South Interior Districts. Residents in these areas are advised to take precautions to stay cool and hydrated.
