Geoscience Australia is modernizing its data storage infrastructure for a massive six-petabyte pool of petroleum exploration data. The agency is transitioning from tape to cloud storage.This data, collected by industry stakeholders and submitted to the government. It is then accessed by various entities including the government, research institutions, and industry organizations. Currently, access is granted through an online system called NOPIMS or a client services team for larger files.
The agency plans to replace its current on-premises IBM stack, including an Automated Tape Library and Storage Protect software, with a cloud-based system. The new system will need to handle the agency’s current six-petabyte data storage and accommodate an expected annual growth of two petabytes. Additionally, it should address current infrastructure limitations, technology obsolescence, and data processing and retrieval challenges.
Geoscience Australia seeks a solution that provides final data storage and access from a cloud environment. The chosen system must also meet the agency’s storage and throughput needs for the next 10 to 15 years and beyond.
This modernization project, dubbed the Repository Data Management and Delivery (RDMD) project, aims to improve data accessibility and management while ensuring long-term sustainability for Geoscience Australia’s vital petroleum exploration data infrastructure.
