As of right now, 3000 payphones will offer free wi-fi, and Telstra plans to improve its entire phone network so that it may offer free wi-fi “over the coming years.”
Michael Ackland, group executive for small business and consumers, said the action drew on a prior one that made regular calls and SMS from payphones free in August of last year.
Ackland stated that one of the initiative’s top priorities was for Telstra to equip 1,000 payphones in disaster-prone regional locations with improved power resilience and wi-fi capabilities.
Nearly 19 million free calls, including “more than 250,000 calls to crucial services like Triple Zero (000) and Lifeline,” were made from Telstra payphones in the previous year, according to the company.
In the previous year, “Centrelink was the most dialled service from payphones,” it was stated.
